Coppell, TX Area Guide

History

In 1832, a farming community known as “Grapevine Springs” was organized near present-day Grapevine Springs Park, and settlers of German and French descent began moving to the area in the 1840s. In 1846 Dallas County was founded, and ten years later the city of Dallas was established.

In 1873, the small community of Gibbs, named in honor of former Texas Senator and Lieutenant Governor Barnett Gibbs, was established. The name was later changed to “Coppell” in honor of George Coppell, a prominent New York businessman in the railroad business. Once the Cotton Belt Railroad was completed, the Coppell train stop was so important to the community that in 1892 the residents of Gibbs officially renamed the post office and town to Coppell.

The railroad provided much-needed transportation to many of the farms in this area and was an essential part of the community into the 1920s when paved roads and automobiles arrived. The Interstate Highway system was constructed in the 1960s and extended regional access to Coppell and many of the surrounding areas.

The City of Coppell’s logo was designed to celebrate the City’s rich heritage and includes crossed post oak branches (symbolizing unity, solidity, and longevity), three stars (reminders of the three important pillars of the community: Grapevine Springs, Gibbs Station, and Coppell), and the date the city was first established.
